Sinopsis

En un entorno rural, una joven resiste el matrimonio arreglado que su familia intenta imponerle. Su negativa, leída como posesión demoníaca, revela un entramado de control y violencia sobre el cuerpo y la voluntad femenina.

In a rural setting, a young woman resists the arranged marriage that her family tries to impose on her. Her refusal, interpreted as demonic possession, reveals a web of control and violence over women's bodies and will.

Nació en Irán, y estudió cine en Estados Unidos antes de regresar a Irán, donde escribió y dirigió The Sealed Soil en vísperas de la Revolución. La película estuvo prohibida en Irán durante muchos años, pero posteriormente obtuvo reconocimiento internacional por su sutil crítica al patriarcado y su realismo poético.

She was born in Iran, and studied film in the United States before returning to Iran, where she wrote and directed The Sealed Soil on the eve of the Iranian Revolution. The film was banned in Iran for many years but later gained international recognition for its subtle critique of patriarchy and its poetic realism.

Rodada originalmente en 16mm, la película narra lo que se ha dado en llamar “rebelión pasiva”, menos un gesto de franca confrontación que una negativa a convertirse en lo que no se desea. Una mujer de una localidad de provincia iraní no quiere casarse de acuerdo con los arreglos que se han convenido entre su familia y la del futuro marido. La primera película iraní dirigida por una mujer es mucho más que una curiosidad estadística. En el tránsito del pensamiento familiar tradicional hacia ideas de liberación propias de la modernidad, la directora produce un manifiesto cuya serenidad y belleza formal no van en desmedro de su contundencia. Muy por el contrario, la película trasluce una cotidianidad en la que el implacable agobio de una vida se convierte casi pudorosamente en germen de resistencia. Juan Pablo Semino

Originally shot on 16mm film, the movie depicts what has come to be known as “passive rebellion”—less an act of open defiance than a refusal to become something one does not wish to be. A woman from a small town in provincial Iran does not want to marry according to the arrangements agreed upon by her family and that of her future husband. The first Iranian film directed by a woman is much more than a statistical curiosity. In the transition from traditional family values to modern ideas of liberation, the director creates a manifesto whose serenity and formal beauty do not detract from its power. Quite the contrary, the film shows an everydayness in which the relentless weight of one life almost modestly becomes the seed of resistance. JPS
