Me gusta pensar que para ciertas películas uno debe saltar al vacío. Aceptar que el director tiene un microcosmos definido y que el pacto hay que hacerlo antes de entrar a la sala. Un poco a ciegas. Cronenberg pertenece a esa liga. Con él todo puede pasar. La metáfora sexual y social de Shivers parece simple y perturbadora, pero su cine jamás se queda ahí. Sus ideas se desplazan, mutan, se reproducen. Incluso se tornan escatológicas. Su cine es movedizo, como las larvas. Lo fascinante es que todo ocurre en un edificio nuevo, limpio, pensado como refugio para la clase media. Él lo toma y convierte el deseo en virus, el cuerpo en campo de batalla y deja flotando la sospecha de que debajo de la civilización siempre hay algo esperando moverse. I like to think that for certain films, you have to take a leap of faith. Accept that the director has a defined microcosm and that the pact must be made before entering the theater. A little blindly. Cronenberg belongs to that league. With him, anything can happen. The sexual and social metaphor of Shivers seems simple and disturbing, but his cinema never stays there. His ideas shift, mutate, reproduce. They even become scatological. His cinema is unsteady, like larvae. What is fascinating is that everything takes place in a new, clean building, designed as a refuge for the middle class. He takes this and turns desire into a virus, the body into a battlefield, and leaves floating the suspicion that beneath civilization there is always something waiting to move. Something small, slimy, persistent. Like larvae. Yummy. SS
