Sinopsis

En el único pueblo del mundo donde reina el silencio, la tensión crece mientras Misra Khatoon se acerca a la fecha de parto. Los aldeanos rodean su casa y golpean tambores, esperando una señal del recién nacido.

In the world's only village in the world where silence reigns, tension mounts as Misra Khatoon approaches childbirth. The villagers surround her home and beat drums seeking a response from the newborn.

(1999, India). Es un documentalista y periodista de la localidad de Bhaderwah. Su film estudiantil Edge of Sunshine, que documenta cuestiones migratorias, fue finalista en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Calcuta.

Only If the Baby Cries pone el foco en una pequeña comunidad cuya singularidad la vuelve irresistible para la curiosidad antropológica. Sin caer en la trampa del exotismo nos invita a recorrer el paisaje y sus habitantes, a percibir esa atmósfera sutilmente enrarecida, para luego instalar el tema y resignificar todo lo visto (y oído) bajo otro signo, el de la fatalidad y el destino, lo inexplicable, la naturaleza y sus misterios. Con un desenlace que corta el aliento, en un pase de manos con la ficción como ejercicio de suspenso documental, esta breve película alcanza dimensiones de luminosa belleza y de profunda conexión con esas vidas retratadas, con la distancia justa, siendo parte de un mundo que nos es completamente ajeno. Only If the Baby Cries focuses on a small community whose uniqueness makes it irresistible to anthropological curiosity. Without falling into the trap of exoticism, it invites us to tour the landscape and its inhabitants, to perceive that subtly rarefied atmosphere and then raise the issue and resignify everything that has been seen (and heard) under another sign, that of fatality and fate, the inexplicable, nature and its mysteries. With a breathtaking conclusion, in a sleight of hand with fiction as an exercise in documentary suspense, this short film reaches dimensions of luminous beauty and deep connection with the lives portrayed, with just the right distance, being part of a world that is completely alien to us.
