Sinopsis
Eddie Felson, un jugador veterano de billar, descubre a Vincent, un joven talentoso y arrogante, y decide convertirlo en su protegido. Entre torneos y apuestas, la relación se tensa mientras ambos enfrentan el orgullo, la ambición y el deseo de demostrar quién es el mejor.

Durante un tiempo la historia del cine quiso establecer que entre Toro salvaje (1980) y Buenos muchachos (1990) Scorsese no había hecho otra cosa que películas menores. La mala prensa que la década del 80 tuvo durante años ayudó a eso. Pero esta secuela de The Hustler (1961, Robert Rossen) es uno de los cuatro grandes títulos que el director realizó en ese período menos exitoso pero igualmente personal. Los otros fueron El rey de la comedia (1982), Después de hora (1986) y La última tentación de Cristo (1988). La historia del hombre mayor que instruye pero a la vez compite con el hombre joven resulta atractiva para Scorsese. Las escenas de pool son legendarias, y Tom Cruise, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio y Paul Newman brillan como bellos marginales. For some time, film history sought to establish that between Raging Bull (1980) and Goodfellas (1990), Scorsese had done nothing but minor films. The bad press that the 1980s received for years contributed to this. But this sequel to The Hustler (1961, Robert Rossen) is one of four great films that the director made during this less successful but equally personal period. The others were The King of Comedy (1982), After Hours (1986), and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). The story of the older man who mentors but also competes with the younger man is appealing to Scorsese. The pool scenes are legendary, and Tom Cruise, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Paul Newman shine as beautiful outcasts. For the latter, the film finally earned him the Oscar for Best Actor. SG
