James Benning says that for those familiar with 13 Lakes or Ten Skies, there’s no need to explain what Eight Bridges is about. Perhaps there is for the uninitiated: eight shots of eight bridges, each lasting ten minutes. As with the lakes, these bridges—filmed across the entire geography of the United States (there’s another way to measure the film: the 12,000 kilometers it took Benning to shoot it)—are not immediately recognizable, even though the first one, the Golden Gate Bridge over San Francisco Bay, might lead us astray. The choice of each one may carry a very different (autobiographical) significance, but what matters is the challenge it presents: learning to unravel how much information a static shot can conceal.
