Tras décadas de carrera, Eleonora Duse revisa una trayectoria legendaria cuando, en los años convulsos entre la Primera Guerra y el ascenso del fascismo, decide volver al escenario donde comenzó todo.

After decades on stage, Eleonora Duse looks back on a legendary career when, in the savage days between World War I and the rise of Fascism, she decides to returns to where her life began: the stage.

Una película sobre el cambio de siglo, del paso del XIX al XX, a partir del retrato crepuscular de la gran diva de teatro italiano Eleonora Duse. Una época de confusión, en el teatro, con nuevas formas de interpretación a las que la Duse ya no se adapta; en la política, con el ascenso del fascismo, con el que coquetea D’Annunzio, el autor de muchos de sus papeles, y que tanto la incomoda; en la economía, con la actriz al borde de la bancarrota… Y un personaje al que Pietro Marcello aborda siempre desde lo operístico, ya sea desde esos materiales de archivo que trata como interludios musicales que nos sitúan en esos tiempos convulsos, o a partir de la propia interpretación de Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, caracterizada por el exceso, último coletazo de un mundo en extinción. A film about the turn of the century, the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, told through a crepuscular portrait of the great Italian theater diva Eleonora Duse. A time of turmoil: in the theater, with new forms of performance to which Duse can no longer adapt; in politics, with the rise of fascism—to which D’Annunzio, the author of many of her roles, is drawn, much to her discomfort; and in the economy, with the actress on the brink of bankruptcy… And a character whom Pietro Marcello always approaches from an operatic perspective, whether through archival footage treated as musical interludes that transport us to those turbulent times, or through Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s own performance, characterized by excess—the final gasp of a world on the brink of extinction.
