Before the Bright Day nos recuerda una antigua promesa del cine proveniente de Taiwán. La vieja luz y la serenidad de Hou; su desazón callada respecto de un mundo que puede perderse de un momento a otro. La amistad, incluso entre chicos y chicas, como procedimiento o llave con los que se transita un mundo que no se entiende del todo, regido por fuerzas ajenas, a veces inextricables. Before the Bright Day reminds us of an old promise made by Taiwanese cinema. Hou's old light and serenity; his quiet unease about a world that could be lost at any moment. Friendship, even between boys and girls, as a means or key to navigating a world that is not fully understood, governed by forces beyond our control, sometimes inextricable. The film is like walking along a path that runs through endless minutiae whose brilliance illuminates the screen. As in Hou's Daughter of the Nile (which, coincidentally or not, also begins in a classroom), Tsao does not waste a second of footage on extravagances; his images display a transparency that can be associated with the rehearsed haughtiness with which young people approach life.
