En Barrio triste da toda la impresión de que estamos en presencia de un raro artefacto capaz de registrar el mundo conocido mientras se sugiere la existencia de otro. Hay una velocidad apabullante durante casi toda la película que va sumergiéndose en un final que es lírico, misterioso, con un inesperado dejo de redención. Pero no se trata de dos películas en una; la parte urgente, cochambrosa y desolada deja paso a una sección más contemplativa y enigmática, como si una suerte de realismo social incluyera la posibilidad de una extrañeza radical. El misterio de los chicos desaparecidos, que parecen habitar una especie de zona o mundo paralelo (como en Lunar Park, de Bret Easton Ellis), es quizá el modo en que la película parpadea de perplejidad frente a una incertidumbre abrumadora. In Barrio triste, we get the impression that we are in the presence of a rare artifact capable of capturing the known world while suggesting the existence of another. There is an overwhelming speed throughout most of the film, which gradually submerges into a lyrical, mysterious ending with an unexpected hint of redemption. But this is not two films in one; the urgent, sleazy, desolate part gives way to a more contemplative and enigmatic section, as if a kind of social realism included the possibility of radical strangeness. The mystery of the missing boys, who seem to inhabit a kind of parallel zone or world (as in Bret Easton Ellis' Lunar Park), is perhaps the way in which the film flickers with perplexity in the face of overwhelming uncertainty.
