Sinopsis

Un pájaro enjaulado revolotea y se agita en lucha por su libertad. Solo rindiéndose ante el poder de la música y el movimiento podrá por fin alzar vuelo. A partir de animaciones pintadas a mano y tambores viscerales, la dramática situación plantea una pregunta: ¿es la libertad un estado del ser o de la mente?

A caged bird flutters and flails in a struggle for freedom. But only by surrendering to the transcendent power of music and movement is the bird finally able to soar. Through hand-painted animation and visceral drumming, the dramatic plight begs the question: Is freedom a state of being, or is it a state of mind?

Nacido en Irán, su cine integra la fotografía, la animación y el diseño. Creó la animación para la premiada producción de la NFB Oscar (2016) y participó en los equipos de animación de películas como Desencantada (2022), producida por Disney.

Reseña / Review

El juguete óptico que hemos visto decenas veces (el más famoso es el de La leyenda del jinete sin cabeza): un círculo, un dibujo distinto de cada lado (generalmente, una jaula y un pájaro), un hilo que permite girar el círculo, un poco de fricción y, voilà, pájaro enjaulado. Samaa toma ese universo, el del juego óptico y las aves –es decir, materia fundacional lúdica del cine como maravilla posible, al alcance literal de la mano–, y lo expande. Genera cientos de notas posibles: visuales, musicales, estroboscópicas. En Samaa, el cine vive como un pájaro: ínfimo en su tamaño pero también capaz de lo imposible (a nuestros ojos y a su vez espejando nuestros límites) y de redescubrir la libertad a medida que va tomando vuelo. The optical toy we have seen dozens of times (the most famous is the one in Sleepy Hollow): a circle, a different drawing on each side (usually a cage and a bird), a thread that allows the circle to rotate, a bit of friction and, voilà, a caged bird. Samaa takes this universe, that of optical play and birds -that is, the playful base material of cinema as a possible marvel, literally at hand's reach-, and expands it. It generates hundreds of possible notes: visual, musical, stroboscopic. In Samaa, cinema lives like a bird: tiny in its size but also capable of the impossible (in our eyes and at the same time mirroring our limits) and of rediscovering freedom as it takes flight. JMD
