Mientras las Baby Assassins se convertían en serie de tv, Sakamoto eligió —o fue el elegido para— adaptar al cine el manga Nemurubaka (2008). El porqué de la elección parece claro: en esas viñetas hay dos chicas que viven juntas, tienen temperamentos casi opuestos y no le encuentran la gracia al chiste de hacerse adultas. Sí, Yumi y Ruka son Chisato y Mahiro sin el fervor homicida. Los modos de su amistad, la devoción por comer y beber aunque no tengan plata, la distancia cringeosa con los chicos y hasta sus cortes de pelo son prácticamente los mismos; pero, con mucho J-pop y un uso magistral del silencio como remate cómico, Sakamoto transmuta la superacción hiperbólica en un coming of age luminoso y excéntrico, de esos que ya no se ven tanto como nos gustaría en el cine japonés. While the Baby Assassins were being turned into a TV series, Sakamoto chose—or was chosen—to adapt the manga Nemurubaka (2008) for the big screen. The reason for this choice seems clear: in these comic strips, there are two girls who live together, have almost opposite temperaments, and don't find the idea of becoming adults funny. Yes, Yumi and Ruka are Chisato and Mahiro without the homicidal fervor. The nature of their friendship, their devotion to eating and drinking even though they have no money, their cringe-worthy distance from boys, and even their haircuts are practically the same; but, with lots of J-pop and a masterful use of silence as comic relief, Sakamoto transmutes hyperbolic superaction into a luminous and eccentric coming-of-age tale, the kind we don't see as much as we'd like in Japanese cinema.
