A group of students from Hamilton, Ontario go on a three-week tour of China in 1972. These teenagers were the first North American students to visit China since 1949.

El título recuerda a los libros de grandes viajeros, o de grandes escritores que viajan y cuentan lo que han visto. La cuota de exotismo que la palabra China trae asociada no es para desestimar. El corto nos trae de vuelta un clima de guerra fría que fue fundamental en tiempos de su rodaje. El grupo de estudiantes viaja hacia una tierra desconocida, que no es la que se encontró Marco Polo, pero que de todas formas guarda el gran misterio de la China revolucionaria. Concebido como una suerte de diario de viaje colectivo, narrado por dos de los jóvenes participantes de la excursión, el material que lo constituye proviene de fotografías y de filmaciones de los propios estudiantes. Escuelas, fábricas, lugares históricos, el corto resulta ser un intrigante compendio de perplejidad y fascinación. Manuel Ramírez

The title evokes the books of great travelers, or of great writers who travel and recount what they have seen. The sense of exoticism associated with the word “China” is not to be dismissed. The short film brings us back to the atmosphere of the Cold War, which was a defining feature at the time of its filming. The group of students travels to an unknown land—not the one Marco Polo found, but one that nonetheless holds the great mystery of revolutionary China. Conceived as a sort of collective travel diary, narrated by two of the young participants on the trip, the material that makes up the film comes from photographs and footage shot by the students themselves. Schools, factories, historical sites—the short film turns out to be an intriguing compendium of perplexity and fascination. MR
