Recorriendo sus películas anteriores, Jia Zhang-ke ofrece una mirada épica al destino romántico de Qiaoqiao, su eterna heroína, y ofrece una nueva perspectiva de la China contemporánea, sumida en cambios turbulentos.

Traversing all of his past films, Jia Zhang-ke delivers an epic look at the romantic destiny of his perennial heroine, Qiaoqiao, and offers a new perspective of contemporary China which is going through turbulent changes.

(1970, Fengyang, China). Es guionista, productor y cineasta. Estudió en la Academia de Cine de Pekín, y dirigió varios largometrajes; entre ellos, Platform (mejor película en el Bafici ‘01), Useless (Bafici ‘10) y Los hedonistas (Bafici ‘17).

Película recapituladora, Caught by the Tides reincide en el discurso del cine de Jia Zhang-ke, el de los cambios operados en China en el transcurso de las últimas décadas, a partir de cuatro rodajes: 2001, 2006, 2017 y 2023, que se corresponden, en los tres primeros casos, con las filmaciones de Unknown Pleasures, Still Life y Ash Is the Purest White. Reutilizando descartes y escenas de estas películas, Jia reconstruye la historia de China al tiempo que le da forma a una historia de amor y de diáspora protagonizada por dos de sus personajes recurrentes, Qiaoqiao (Zhao Tao) y Bin (Li Zhubin). A recapitulatory film, Caught by the Tides reprises the discourse of Jia Zhang-ke's cinema, that of the changes that have taken place in China over the course of the last few decades, based on four shoots: 2001, 2006, 2017 and 2023, which correspond, in the first three cases, to the filming of Unknown Pleasures, Still Life and Ash Is the Purest White. Reusing outtakes and scenes from these films, Jia reconstructs Chinese history while shaping a story of love and diaspora starring two of his recurring characters, Qiaoqiao (Zhao Tao) and Bin (Li Zhubin). In this way, Caught by the Tides is, at the same time, an archive film and the synthesis and alternative version of all his previous cinema. JP
