Losier incorporates The Residents into her informal (read playful, giggly, dreamy) series of documentaries that portray key figures of avant-garde music. But unlike Genesis P-Orridge, Peaches or Felix Kubin, the Californians - cultivators of the theory of obscurity, which postulates anonymity as a condition for authentic art - have no face to portray. Barking in the Dark is and is not, then, the portrait of The Residents: a Schröndinger film that explores with feline grace and curiosity -yes, the paradox goes all the way to its title- the corners of an extraordinary (i.e. wonderful, unusual like a giant eye dressed in tailcoat and top hat) archive, convinced that there are mysteries that deserve to remain so.
