Sinopsis

Sumido en una adolescencia prolongada de fiestas y errores en Londres, Jonah huye a la costa escocesa con su amigo Lee. Allí conoce a Charlie, un hombre sordo con sus propias cargas. La amistad inesperada lo enfrenta a la vulnerabilidad y abre paso a un cambio.

Drifting through an extended adolescence of parties and bad decisions in London, Jonah escapes to the wild Scottish coast with his best friend Lee. There, they meet Charlie, a deaf man dealing with his own baggage. The unexpected friendship confronts him with his own vulnerability and paves the way for change.

Cineasta nacida y criada en Londres, salvo por un año memorable que pasó en la región de Midlands. Mientras estudiaba en el Camden School de mujeres, realizó su primer cortometraje, que ella misma escribió, protagonizó y editó. Esto marcó el inicio de su trayectoria como cineasta.

A filmmaker, born and raised in London, except for one impactful year spent in the Midlands. While studying at Camden School for Girls, Cairns made her first short film which she wrote, starred in, and edited herself. It marked the beginning of her journey as a filmmaker.

En las islas el mar sí se puede concebir, o concebir con mayor facilidad y cercanía. El mar como promesa, como escape, como posibilidad de sanación. Ópera prima orgullosa de sus lugares y de su viaje, The Son and the Sea descree de la distancia y del ascetismo, o más bien descree de la desaprensión, tanto emocional como en términos de puesta en escena (la cámara cercana, que se mueve porque busca empatía y calidez y nunca el mareo o la confusión). Relato cargado de sutil vitalidad (o de su búsqueda), el film de Stroma Cairns encuentra refugio en casas que miran un horizonte lejano, en bares, en el paisaje. On the islands, the sea can be conceived, or be conceived more easily and closely. The sea as a promise, as an escape, as a possibility for healing. A debut film proud of its locations and its journey, The Son and the Sea disbelieves in distance and asceticism, or, rather, disbelieves in detachment, both emotionally and in terms of the mise en scène (the camera is close, moving because it seeks empathy and warmth, never dizziness or confusion). A narrative charged with subtle vitality (or the search for it), Stroma Cairns' film finds refuge in houses that look out to a distant horizon, in bars, in the landscape. And in the characters, their encounters and their pauses to look and—once again—recognize each other, with a sense of belonging. A film that is happily local and not global. JPF
