The New Year That Never Came is populated with ghosts. But those ghosts laugh, they shake their ribs: they harass and parody the agony. This extraordinary film displays that double Romanian laughter, which on the one hand lightens and on the other poisons. Like the Poles, Romanians are resigned to the past. The film is fast-paced, recounting the dictator's last days in power, amidst all the reigning confusion and paranoia. The ending, with Ravel in the background, is a montage that Paul Thomas Anderson could have come up with, but it is particularly effective in its palette of fictional images and authentic ones. Mureşanu creates a fiction in which the fever of the moment does not redeem his protagonists from the fatality of pain. DO
